CNN —“Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham rebuked a photographer who allegedly asked her to “show” her leg on the red carpet at the Olivier Awards in London, and the moment went viral on social media. Fans captured the moment when Waddingham, who was hosting the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, stopped posing for pictures and confronted the photographer. “Oh my god, you’d never say that to a man, my friend,” she said. With her powerhouse vocals and easy charisma, Waddingham has become an increasingly popular host for such events, particularly after wowing audiences as one of the hosts of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Waddingham has three Olivier nominations herself.

A reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard,” starring Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond, the long forgotten silent movie star who descends into madness, was the big winner at this year’s Olivier Awards, Britain’s equivalent of the Tonys. The musical, which will open at the St. James Theater on Broadway this fall, was honored Sunday during a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London with seven awards, including best musical revival, best actress in a musical for Scherzinger, best actor in a musical for Tom Francis, as the screenwriter who falls for Desmond’s charms, and best director for Jamie Lloyd. The number of awards was hardly a surprise. After the musical opened last fall, critics praised Lloyd’s stark production, especially highlighting its contemporary twists that included using cameras to zoom in on characters’ faces, then beam their emotions onto a screen at the back of the stage. Matt Wolf, writing in The New York Times, said that Lloyd’s production belonged firmly “to the here and now.” With this show, the director “takes an established musical by the scruff of the neck and sends it careering into the modern day,” Wolf added.

Part of the kick of “Master Gardener” is that the writer-director Paul Schrader manages to pull off this improbable movie. As has been the case in many of Schrader’s stories, this one centers on a man who’s of this world and apart. That character — “God’s lonely man,” as he’s called in “Taxi Driver,” which Schrader wrote — has appeared repeatedly in his filmography. That lonely man is here again, risen once more in “Master Gardener,” but now named Narvel Roth and played like a clenched fist by Joel Edgerton. In all three movies, a solitary, soul-weary man in crisis — who’s invariably seen alone in a room writing in a journal he shares in voice-over — undergoes a kind of transfiguration.
